Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups long-grain white rice (uncooked)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) French onion soup (condensed)
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • 4 tablespoons butter (melted)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere or Swiss cheese (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley (for garnish)

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Combine the uncooked rice, French onion soup, beef broth, melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder in your prepared baking dish. Stir everything together thoroughly.
  3. Season your French onion rice casserole with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil.
  5. Bake for 45-50 minutes. Check at the 45-minute mark by carefully lifting the foil and testing a grain of rice.
  6. If adding cheese, remove the foil during the last 10 minutes of baking. Sprinkle the cheese over the top and return to the oven uncovered.
  7. Remove from the oven and let the casserole rest for 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

Use real butter for richness. Ensure the foil seal is tight to trap steam. Let the casserole rest after baking for best results.
