Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1½ cups granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, pure preferred
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder, fresh
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup whole milk, room temperature
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon, ground
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, for finishing

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan thoroughly or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat butter and 1 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about three minutes.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then add vanilla extract.
  5. Alternate adding the flour mixture and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with flour. Mix just until combined.
  6. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, remaining granulated sugar, and cinnamon for the topping.
  7. Pour batter into the prepared pan and sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the top. Swirl gently with a knife.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Let cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Use room temperature ingredients for best results. Don't overmix the batter to ensure a tender texture. Store covered at room temperature for up to three days or refrigerate for up to one week.
