Ingredients

  • 6 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamo
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped pecans, toasted
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Generously butter a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Combine sliced apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl. Toss until apples are evenly coated and let sit for 10 minutes.
  3. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. In a separate bowl, combine melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
  4. Pour the batter into your prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly. Distribute the apple mixture over the batter, including all accumulated juices, and sprinkle chopped pecans on top.
  5. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over everything. Bake for 45-55 minutes until the top turns golden brown and apples are tender.
  6. Allow to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Always toast your pecans before adding them. Choose firm, tart apple varieties for the best results. Don't skip the resting time after baking to improve texture. For extra decadence, brush the top with melted butter halfway through baking.
